Grüne demand Merz prioritize a female, broadly recognized successor for President Steinmeier

The Greens have joined the debate regarding the successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Katharina Dröge, the Greens’ parliamentary group leader, told the newspaper “Bild” that she expects “more professionalism” from the CDU’s Friedrich Merz on this issue. She argued that it is inappropriate for the CDU and CSU to publicly argue over names, given the importance of the office and the integrity of the potential candidates.

Dröge stated that the time has come for a woman to hold the role, noting that the position has exclusively been held by men for over seven decades. Furthermore, she called on Merz to put forward a female candidate who possesses widespread nationwide recognition and renown.

Dröge stressed that the election of the Federal President is more critical than ever in these polarized times, stating that this opportunity should be used to elect a figure who can unite people across party lines.
