Police are conducting a large-scale search for a suspect after a vehicle drove into a crowd during the Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebration in Berlin. According to the dts news agency, a police helicopter equipped with thermal imaging capabilities is currently deployed over the Tiergarten park.
While earlier reports suggested an arrest had taken place, a police spokesperson initially denied the claim. Police have confirmed at least one fatality and 15 injuries, several of which are life-threatening.
The incident occurred around 10 PM when the driver of a white vehicle struck multiple individuals on Ahornsteig in the Great Tiergarten. Images from the scene showed the white van crashing into an obstacle and being severely damaged. Security forces reported finding no occupants inside the vehicle. The area was extensively cordoned off, leading to the official cancellation of the CSD event.
Christopher Street Day is a celebration of lesbian, gay, and other “queer” individuals that has been held for decades on various dates. The largest annual parades for the CSD take place in Berlin and Cologne.
