Diplomatic Rifts Lead to Zelenskyy’s Absence from Key Poland-Ukraine Reconstruction Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not be attending the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference in Danzig. In Kyiv on Tuesday, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Swyrydenko announced that she will be leading the Ukrainian delegation.

This conference, which is being held in Poland for the first time, is considered one of the most significant international events dedicated to supporting Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts. Swyrydenko noted that the Ukrainian team has clear objectives: to achieve concrete agreements that strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and sustainability, while also expanding economic cooperation with international partners.

Zelenskyy’s decision to forgo attendance comes amidst a rising historical dispute between his country and Poland. Relations between the neighboring nations have become particularly strained following Zelenskyy’s action of naming a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), an act that assigns responsibility to Poland for the killing of tens of thousands of Poles during World War II.

This move drew widespread criticism in Poland, leading Polish President Karol Nawrocki to revoke the White Eagle Order from Zelenskyy, a development that provoked significant outrage within Ukraine.
