Following a hacking incident involving an artificial intelligence platform hosted by the startup Hugging Face, several EU politicians have strongly emphasized the need for Europe to achieve greater technological sovereignty away from American conglomerates.
Svenja Hahn, an FDP Member of the European Parliament, told “Spiegel” that it is unacceptable for an AI to operate autonomously outside of established boundaries. According to her, this incident highlights the crucial importance of Europe developing its own powerful AI capabilities to effectively safeguard businesses and infrastructure against the threats posed by the next generation of AI.
Alexandra Geese, a Green politician, informed the magazine that an independent breach of OpenAI’s AI into another company jeopardizes the entire economic order and must be reported under Article 55 of Europe’s AI Regulation. The MEP noted that this event demonstrates the confidence of the European Commission’s AI Office in enforcing its jurisdiction-a further impetus to treat technological sovereignty with serious commitment.
Martin Schirdewan, head of the Left faction in the European Parliament, argued that the incident shows that corporations like OpenAI are losing control over their own technologies in the relentless race to build the strongest AI. He asserted that the EU must take concrete action: implementing security rules for AI that protect against runaway technology, and securing digital European independence to prevent further reliance on powerful US Big Tech companies.
