A coalition involving nine European nations and Ukraine has announced the formation of an alliance dedicated to developing purely defensive missile defense capabilities throughout the continent.
The joint declaration, signed on Monday by Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine, emphasizes the urgent need for an integrated missile defense system to safeguard Europe against future threats posed by ballistic missiles.
The new coalition plans to unify the defense industry, research capabilities, and operational experience to establish a shared missile defense capacity for Europe. The declaration specifically lauded Ukraine’s “unique experience,” noting that its air defense systems have been repeatedly tested by Russian missile attacks in recent weeks.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the establishment of the missile defense coalition would both support Ukraine and significantly strengthen the continent’s defense capabilities. This announcement followed closely on the heels of a NATO summit aimed at demonstrating long-term support for Ukraine and transatlantic unity. In response, the Kremlin criticized the coalition, labeling the participating countries as “war drivers” and asserting that Moscow would closely observe these military developments.
