Just hours before the round of 16 fixtures between the USA and Belgium, the North American World Cup has been shaken by a significant scandal. The FIFA had announced the previous day that a red card suspension for US striker Folarin Balogun would be lifted and suspended “on probation.” However, the global governing body failed to provide any justification for this decision.
Meanwhile, media reports are increasingly alleging that FIFA President Gianni Infantino received a call from U.S. President Donald Trump in the run-up to the resolution. Following the dismissal-which many experts had already deemed an incorrect decision-Trump had reportedly expressed considerable frustration.
Criticism of this entire procedure has come from multiple nations, including Germany’s DFB (German Football Association). Bernd Neuendorf, president of the DFB, told “Kicker” that FIFA must now quickly clarify these reports. He emphasized that issues surrounding “the integrity of the competition and the credibility of FIFA.” According to him, the perception that there was political influence actively interfering with sport must be dismissed swiftly and convincingly.
