G7 Leaders Intensify Ukraine Crisis Talks Amid Broader Global Diplomacy Push

The heads of state and government of the G7 proceeded with their three-day summit in France on Tuesday, carrying out discussions regarding the war in Ukraine, albeit with considerable delays. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also joined the negotiations in Évian that morning. Initially, the reason for the postponement was unclear, with U.S. President Donald Trump arriving at the negotiation room last.

The first working session is scheduled to focus initially on the stalled Ukraine negotiations. Prior to the summit, Trump had spoken with Zelenskyy and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin by phone. According to Zelenskyy, the intention had been to invite Putin to Lake Geneva as well, but he rejected the invitation.

Throughout the remainder of the day, the G7 summit will also host working sessions dedicated to the Middle East, as well as meetings with partner countries including India, Brazil, Egypt, and South Korea. Numerous bilateral meetings are also planned, as is customary. However, a large, comprehensive final declaration covering all outcomes is not expected at the summit in its current state; rather, declarations on individual topics are anticipated.
