German Donations Decline Amid Financial Strain and Skepticism Towards NGOs

Another survey indicates a continued decline in donor numbers across Germany. According to research conducted by Yougov for the dts Nachrichtenagentur, current data shows that 13 percent of people regularly donate, while an additional 25 percent donate occasionally, totaling 38 percent. However, the actual statistics may paint a different picture. Yougov also operates a “Charity Panel” that measures proven donor behaviour. According to this panel, only 17 percent of the population actually donated during the first half of 2026, representing a decrease of one percentage point compared to the previous year. Concurrently, one-third (33 percent) of people reported that they used to donate but no longer do, while a quarter (26 percent) have stated that they have never donated at all.

The propensity to donate varies significantly depending on political leaning. Among Green voters, the willingness to donate is highest: 25 percent stated they give regularly, and another 33 percent give occasionally. In contrast, among AfD voters, the proportion of regular donors is only 11 percent. Furthermore, 34 percent of AfD voters reported never having donated, which is the highest figure observed across all surveyed groups.

When asked about the main barriers to giving, Germans most frequently cited their personal financial situation, with 42 percent saying they currently cannot afford to donate. This was followed by 27 percent expressing doubts about the sensible use of the money, and 26 percent citing a lack of transparency regarding precisely what happens to donated funds. This survey was carried out between August 28 and 31 among 2,321 people.

Frieder Schmid of Yougov noted that these results surface during a period when the work of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is being discussed more controversially than in years past. He added that some citizens were evaluating the work of NGOs through a partisan lens, making it more critical than ever for organizations to actively lobby for public trust and clearly explain their operations. Supporting this trend, the German Donation Council had already reported at the start of the year that the willingness to give in Germany was under severe pressure, noting that donation revenue had dropped to 4.65 billion euros in 2025, marking its lowest level in years.
