Elisabeth Kaiser, the Federal Government’s Eastern Commissioner and an SPD member, has assured that a reform of the inheritance tax is coming. Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Kaiser stated that she, along with her party, is strongly advocating for this change, noting that it is unjust for wealthy individuals in Germany to exploit tax loopholes and pay virtually nothing.
When questioned about why the reform was absent from the recent government package, the SPD politician explained that the legislature is not even halfway through its term, and current reform decisions simply represent a starting point. Furthermore, a pending ruling from the Federal Constitutional Court regarding inheritance tax must be carefully reviewed. This court in Karlsruhe is expected to rule later this year on whether certain privileges granted to business assets within the inheritance and gift tax law violate the principle of equality.
