A survey conducted by the polling institute Forsa reveals that a clear majority of Germans do not care whether Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be followed by a man or a woman as Bundespräsident. The findings were reported by RTL and ntv, which commissioned the survey.
Overall, 74 percent of respondents stated that the gender of the next Federal President is irrelevant to them. Of the remaining 26 percent who expressed a preference, 19 percent wish for a woman to hold the highest office, while 5 percent prefer that the role remains held by a man.
When breaking down the preferences by gender, 68 percent of women indicated that the gender does not matter at all, while 27 percent explicitly wish for a woman to be appointed President. Only three percent of women expressed support for a male successor. Among men, the majority remains indifferent, with 81 percent stating that gender is irrelevant. Only 11 percent of men supported a female president, and 7 percent supported a continuation of male leadership.
Regarding political leanings, the highest proportion of people desiring a female president comes from supporters of the Left Party (43 percent) and the Green Party (39 percent). Forsa conducted the survey by questioning 1,000 people on August 5th and 6th.
