Germany and Australia Intensify Security Cooperation in Indo-Pacific, Condemn Russia’s War

German and Australian leaders met in Berlin to intensify their defense and security cooperation. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) and Federal Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) welcomed the Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Richard Marles, and Foreign Minister Penny Wong. The ministers strongly condemned Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and demanded Russia’s complete withdrawal. They stressed the necessity of a comprehensive ceasefire and called on the international community to provide support to increase pressure on Russia. Furthermore, they urged Iran to ensure the free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, condemning recent escalations in the region.

In the Indo-Pacific, Germany and Australia are committed to deepening their collaboration and strengthening resilience. The officials emphasized the importance of international law and the freedom of navigation. They reiterated their opposition to unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. To strengthen their defense ties, they agreed to intensify joint military exercises and facilitate the movement of defence personnel.
