Germany Offers Eurofighters and Drones to Address Nato Capability Gaps Amid US Troop Adjustments

Germany intends to contribute a significant amount to address the gaps resulting from the planned withdrawal of US forces and capabilities from the military alliance. This was reported by the newspaper “Welt,” referencing information from NATO circles.

In the weeks leading up to the Ankara summit, European NATO countries held extensive discussions regarding what contribution each nation could offer under the “NATO Force Model.” This concept outlines how many and what kind of troops NATO can deploy to the front lines within ten days, between ten and thirty days, or within a maximum of six months. To fulfill this, member states submit specific capability offerings for land, sea, and air forces.

Sources within NATO indicate that the Europeans have reached an agreement on filling almost all the existing capacity gaps. Concrete offers have already been made by the member states. According to “Welt,” Germany plans to provide two modern F125 type frigates, along with a high single-digit number of Eurofighter jets, two maritime patrol aircraft, and several Heron TP drones, which are set to be available sooner than previously anticipated. This contribution could potentially replace the aircraft carrier strike group that the Americans are withdrawing, with France, Italy, and Germany providing support ships.

Spokespersons for the German Ministry of Defence and NATO declined to comment on specific numbers or weapon systems when approached for clarification.
