The Greens have welcomed the resignation of CDU faction leader Jens Spahn, describing the departure as “consequential.” In a written statement signed by Greens faction leaders Katharina Dröge and Britta Haßelmann, they stressed that the event was not simply a personal decision that ran contrary to their party’s established resolutions.
Instead, they argued that a culmination of scandals, flawed decisions, and weaknesses in leadership ultimately led to this outcome. This included the difficult start of the coalition government, the process of the second-round chancellor election, implementation errors, and specific policy missteps, such as those involving the stabilization of GKV contributions or the contentious dispute over filling a vacant seat on the Federal Constitutional Court. The Green politicians held Spahn accountable for these failures in his role as faction leader.
Furthermore, they pointed to ongoing negative press and unresolved questions concerning mask deals, the issue of charity dinners, and his meetings within Peter Thiel’s network. The statement concluded that the cumulative pressure had become too much. Spahn’s personal conduct no longer matched the political principles and laws he championed within the Bundestag and applied to all of Germany. Such behavior, they asserted, erodes credibility and public trust. Despite their strong criticism, Dröge and Haßelmann added that they personally wish him and his family all the best.
