Grünen leader Franziska Brantner has called on the democratic parties in Saxony-Anhalt to select a cross-party candidate for Minister-President, believing this action will force the BSW (Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance) to define its political stance. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Brantner emphasized that the current focus must be on electing a Minister-President, not on negotiating or voting on individual laws. She pointed out that the vote is currently split into two blocs-39 votes for the AfD and 39 for the democrats-with the BSW situated between them. The Green politician warned that it would be reckless to stand idly by and leave the development to chance.
A democratic, cross-party alliance, she argued, must demand that the BSW make a decision about which side it ultimately supports. If the BSW were to assist an AfD candidate, which she deems plausible, it would have to take full responsibility for that choice, though she stressed that the democratic parties are offering a viable alternative.
Brantner strongly advised against permitting the AfD to gain power so that they can subsequently “expose themselves.” She cited specific local consequences in Saxony-Anhalt, stating that the AfD’s rule would have severe negative impacts on many people. She mentioned the inability of clinics to provide care when migrant doctors and nurses are lacking, the denial of reproductive health counseling to emancipated women, and children in wheelchairs being forced to leave their familiar schools because the AfD advocates for separate institutions for children with and without disabilities.
Brantner asserted that people should not be used as guinea pigs for a radical right and constitutionally hostile ideology. She concluded with a sharp challenge: anyone who argues this position must be prepared to live under an AfD-led government in Saxony-Anhalt tomorrow; otherwise, they should cease making such arguments.
