Greens Push for High-Profile Female President, Criticizing Union’s Delays

In the debate surrounding the highest office of state, the Green party advocates for a female candidate who possesses “the necessary nationwide recognition.” Katharina Dröge, leader of the Green parliamentary group, told Stern that, “It is truly time that a woman holds the head of state position.” She also criticized the Union for seemingly having been searching for a candidate for a long time and discussing names publicly, calling this approach “unprofessional.”

Green politicians further explained that a federal president must be capable of “representing and connecting people across party lines.” Dröge reiterated that there are “many good candidates who have the necessary nationwide recognition and social acknowledgment to perform this office extremely well.”

Within the Greens, the name of Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian State Parliament (CSU), is being cited as a suitable candidate. However, Dröge did not confirm whether Ines Claus, the CDU parliamentary group leader, who has been mentioned in a recent report by the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, would also fit the criteria. The Green parliamentary group leader concluded by urging, “It is time to come to a decision on this.”
