Most Germans watch games from major football tournaments, such as the World Cup, partially from home. This finding comes from a survey conducted by the IT industry association, Bitkom.
According to the poll, 77 percent of respondents watch these events in their own homes to some degree. Viewing with friends, family, or acquaintances is also common; 64 percent watch these games in private gatherings.
However, major football tournaments are not just watched in personal settings. Public spaces are also popular choices: half of the people surveyed in Germany (50 percent) typically watch World Cup matches in restaurants, bars, or pubs. Another third (33 percent) watch games through public viewing events or at fan festivals. Finally, 13 percent follow the games while on the go using a smartphone or tablet, and 12 percent watch them while at work.
Bitkom Research gathered this data by interviewing 1,004 individuals aged 16 and older in Germany. The survey took place between the 17th and 21st calendar week of 2026.
