Iran Conflict Fuels Price Shock, Intensifying Sudan’s Massive Humanitarian Crisis

The World Hunger Hilfe warned about the devastating impact of the Iran War on the food supply situation for the population in Sudan, a country undergoing civil war. Mathias Mogge, the organization’s Secretary General and CEO, told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” that since the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the start of the conflict, prices for food and especially fuel have risen dramatically. Due to the “skyrocketing prices” it is nearly impossible for people in Sudan to provide for themselves. He noted that the cost of wheat on the Sudanese market has increased by 70 percent, with fuel prices rising by up to 80 percent in some areas. According to World Hunger Hilfe, 33.7 million people in the East African nation require aid, and an additional 11.6 million are displaced. Mogge stated to the noz that this constitutes the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Looking ahead to the international Sudan Conference in Berlin on April 15, Mogge called on the international community for greater financial support for the African country, stressing that this aid should not be conditional on any progress made in peace negotiations.
