Following the rampage in Leipzig that resulted in two fatalities, police released further details on Tuesday. Besides the 63-year-old woman and the 77-year-old man who died, six other individuals, aged between 21 and 87, were injured. Among the casualties are two seriously wounded people: a 75-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman. Furthermore, over 80 people required care due to the psychological impact of the event.
Investigators reported that the suspect had previously been involved with the police in 2026 regarding threats and “defamatory offenses in his social environment”. These prior incidents were still under police review. Furthermore, on April 17, a police operation was conducted after a call from the 33-year-old man; following that, he was admitted to a specialized hospital due to his mental state and with his consent, where he remained until April 29. While the suspect has no formal entries in the Federal Central Register, there are currently no outstanding investigation or criminal proceedings against him with the public prosecutor’s office.
The investigation remains ongoing, handled by the Leipzig Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Leipzig Police Department, concerning the suspect’s alleged crimes of double murder and multiple attempted murders. He was temporarily detained yesterday by order of the public prosecutor’s office. The investigating judge at the District Court must still rule, upon the request of the public prosecutor’s office, on the continued detention of the suspect.
The potential motives behind the crime are continuously being investigated. As of now, there are no indications of a political or religious motive. Criminal police efforts at the scene are still underway, and the affected areas remain cordoned off to the public.
