Former Finance Minister and former FDP leader Christian Lindner stated that he viewed Ilse Aigner, the President of the Bavarian State Parliament and a member of the CSU, favorably as a potential candidate for the presidency.Speaking to the television channel “Welt,” Lindner explained that it is beneficial when a candidate commands respect beyond partisan boundaries. He added that given the current climate, possessing experience in top political offices could be a distinct advantage. The former minister explicitly stated his preference: “I would find that Ilse Aigner would be a good choice. I would vote for her.”
Lindner also addressed the tenure of current Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whom he had supported back in February 2022. Far from being disappointed, the former FDP politician acknowledged that Steinmeier had initiated a number of important discussions during his time in office and that he had worked throughout difficult periods. Lindner particularly admired Steinmeier’s willingness to frequently step outside the perceived insularity of political Berlin, effectively bringing the presidential office closer to the broader public. He concluded that while specific speeches may not be remembered, “this effort and this approach have always impressed me.”
