Following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, The Left is maintaining a reserved stance regarding its potential role in the upcoming government formation. Speaking to the dts news agency in Berlin on Monday, lead candidate Eva von Angern stated that “at the end of the day, the parties who are far stronger than us must make the decisions.”
The Left confirmed that it would not support Ulrich Sigmund, the nominated Minister-President candidate from the AfD, clarifying, “There will be no vote from The Left.” Concerning the CDU, she noted that in the coming days, observers will see whether the party manages to “stand up and move forward” or if it “fractures.” When questioned about whether current Minister-President Sven Schulze, who is part of the CDU, remains a relevant point of contact, von Angern simply called it “an exciting question.”
Von Angern also stated that The Left currently sees no reason “to make any offers or start any offensives,” emphasizing that their current primary focus is on “protecting civil society and fulfilling this mandate.”
