Following the passing of the income tax reform in the cabinet, the Left Party is demanding additional relief for consumers. According to Ines Schwerdtner, the leader of Die Linke, people urgently needed support given the soaring prices of fuel and groceries.
Instead, she criticized the Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil (SPD), and the Economy Minister, Katherina Reiche (CDU), saying they were engaged in internal conflict. Schwerdtner insisted that the Finance Minister should present a frank assessment showing what net loss citizens face because the income tax reform does not adequately offset the rising costs associated with healthcare, retirement, rent, gas, and supermarket goods.
She further contended that the federal government owes its citizens money to ensure adequate provision for both high-earners and corporations, arguing this should be achieved through the implementation of a wealth tax and a genuine reform of healthcare and social care services.
