Linke National Congress Kicks Off in Potsdam: Leadership Race, Policy Debates, and Pay Ceiling Discussions Ahead

The Left party began its national party convention in Potsdam on Friday. The highlight of the three-day meeting will be the election of a co-chairperson to work alongside party leader Ines Schwerdtner. Bundestag member Luigi Pantisano has put himself forward as a candidate to succeed Jan van Aken, though other potential contenders have not yet been announced.

Pantisano states that he aims to secure at least 70 percent of the delegate votes in the poll. Van Aken had previously announced in April that he would step down as co-chairperson “for health reasons.” The Left party chief assured members at the time that there was no cause for major concern regarding his condition, adding, “It is not a life-threatening illness. Nevertheless, I must take care of myself, which I am doing now.”

In recent years, the Left party has significantly increased its membership. Correspondingly, the membership base has become generally younger and more female. This trend is leading to recurring debates between longstanding veterans and new members. Discussions regarding foreign policy, particularly the party’s handling of the Israeli government, are expected to be among the contentious topics.

Another highly debated subject will be the capping of salaries for elected officials. According to a submitted proposal, individuals whose current compensation exceeds the net average wage should donate the excess to a party social fund. This fund would, for instance, provide concrete aid through social consultation hours. Currently, these members keep €2,950. Furthermore, an additional net amount of €350 per child or dependent relative needing care is suggested. Adding to the tension, 23 of the 64 members of the Left Bundestag faction had recently requested that the party leadership cancel the debate on the salary cap during the weekend in Potsdam.
