Linke Offers CDU Support in Saxony-Anhalt If Party Shifts on Social Spending

Ines Schwerdtner, the chairperson of The Left party, indicated that they could offer support for a potential CDU minority government in Saxony-Anhalt, provided that the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) aligns its social policies with the Left’s platform. Speaking to the broadcaster “Welt” she emphasized that the CDU must shift its policies toward the Left’s agenda.

Shwerdtner asserted that their primary goal is to keep the AfD marginalized from positions of power. “We will do everything to keep the AfD from the levers of power. I can tell you that” she stated. She argued that the public is not concerned with the details of coalition negotiations, but rather with outcomes: “What changes in the country interests the people?”

While Schwerdtner views the CDU’s continued refusal to collaborate with The Left as a mistake, she stressed that the most important objective is the implementation of leftist policy ideas-acting as a direct counterpoint to the AfD’s platform. She declared, “We will defend democracy, but above all, we will fight for better living standards for people across the country, and we will use every vote to achieve that. With us, there will be no decline or cuts in the social sector. With us, this kind of policy will not exist. This means: I don’t care about the decisions the CDU is making. I find this declaration of incompatibility laughable. For me, the focus is on: What improves for the people in the country”.

Looking forward, Schwerdtner challenged the CDU to define its political direction. “We say clearly: We are for improvements in the country. This means better educational policies in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. And free childcare years”.
