A major fire erupted on Wednesday in a multi-story building located in Delhi, India’s capital, resulting in at least 21 fatalities. The local police confirmed that several other people were injured.
The fire broke out in the Malviya Nagar neighborhood, situated in the southern part of the city. The building housed a ground-floor restaurant and a hotel located on the upper stories. This densely populated area, which primarily consists of residential buildings, is popular among students and young professionals due to its cluster of shops, dining establishments, and small hotels.
Firefighters were mobilized for a massive operation to combat the blaze. Authorities reported that over 40 individuals were successfully rescued and transported to nearby hospitals. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. Visual evidence from the scene showed firefighters battling the burning structure while thick black smoke billowed from the windows.
Local residents assisted in the evacuation and secured the injured individuals before emergency vehicles arrived. Furthermore, local media reports indicated that some of the deceased were foreign nationals who were in India to receive medical treatment, though further specifics on this were not yet clear.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, according to his office’s announcement on platform X. The bereaved families are reportedly set to receive around 2,000 Euros each as immediate financial assistance.
Fires are not an uncommon occurrence in India. Deficiencies in adherence to construction regulations and safety requirements are frequently cited contributors. In older or converted buildings, narrow stairwells, blocked escape routes, inadequate electrical systems, and missing fire safety equipment continually lead to tragic accidents in densely populated urban centers like New Delhi.
