Merz to Meet Azerbaijan President Over Energy, Peace, and Regional Security

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is scheduled to receive Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the Chancellery on Tuesday. Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius announced on Monday that a private discussion is planned covering energy and raw materials, the ongoing regional peace process, and international security policy.

Kornelius told the dts Nachrichtenagentur that “Germany is interested in the peace process in the region,” adding that it is “very, very central to stabilization in the South Caucasus.” He stated that Germany has a high level of interest in achieving “comprehensive peace” between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Furthermore, the spokesperson said Germany is ready to support this process with both partners, noting that Germany also has a strong interest in ensuring that these key countries, located near Iran and within the wider Arab conflict hot spots, can contribute to regional stability.

The visit by Aliyev also includes plans for the signing of a document, although the federal government has stated it will only provide details regarding the contents of the paper after the signing ceremony.
