Merz to Nominate Ilse Aigner for German Presidential Role

The official nomination of Ilse Aigner (CSU) for the presidency of Germany is drawing nearer. Following a joint dinner hosted by the CDU presidium on Sunday evening, attendees confirmed that CDU leader and Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to officially put forward Aigner on Monday. This outcome had been considered highly certain for several days.

The 18th election of the German Federal President, conducted by the Federal Assembly, is scheduled to take place on January 30, 2027, in the Reichstag building in Berlin. The current Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whose second five-year term expires on March 18, 2027, is constitutionally ineligible to be elected a third time.

Typically, the most favorable candidate for the presidency is put forward by the leading parliamentary groups of the Bundestag. However, the precise composition of the Federal Assembly is not yet finalized. It consists equally of members of the Bundestag and delegates chosen from the various state parliaments (Landesparlamente).
