National Colors Divide Young German Politicians Over Patriotism and Extremism

The leaders of the youth organizations within Germany’s parliamentary parties hold varied views regarding the public display of the national colors-black, red, and gold-during the World Cup.

Johannes Winkel, the national chairman of the Young Union, stated in an interview with “Der Spiegel” that he plans to cheer for the German national team in the coming weeks and will display fan items like flags and pennants, seeing no issue with showing the national colors. Winkel views this display as a way to affirm “unity, justice, and freedom.”

Philipp Türmer, the national chairman of the Jusos, also confirmed his support for the German team, noting that the team represents a diverse, open, and modern Germany, even if that has been a long journey. While he plans to wear a German national team jersey while watching the football, he stated he would not hang or wave a German flag. Türmer cited past experiences with far-right groups dressing in national colors during counter-demonstrations as his reason for abstaining.

On the other hand, Luis Bobga, co-spokesperson for the Green Youth, remains uncertain about publicly displaying World Cup accessories, such as a German jersey. He mentioned that “waving German flags unfortunately does not evoke good feelings in me.” However, Bobga expressed understanding for those who do display the flag, asserting that it would be “completely absurd” to assume that anyone showing the national colors holds right-wing political views.

Limes Schäfer, a spokesperson for Linksjugend solid, warned that not everyone supporting the national players does so out of patriotic reasons or nationalistic ideology. He pointed out that extreme-right actors have exploited the widespread use of national color accessories for their political agenda, a development he finds “highly concerning.”

Finally, Jean-Pascal Hohm, the national chairman of the AfD’s youth wing, “Generation Deutschland,” stated that they, and he personally, will naturally be cheering for the German team. Hohm added that, for them, the colors black, red, and gold are not merely “football decor” but a fundamental part of everyday life.
