The heads of the German states have decided that Rheinland-Pfalz will maintain the chairmanship of the Prime Ministers’ Conference (MPK) for an additional year. The state chancellery of Rheinland-Pfalz announced the decision on Thursday, noting that the established sequence of chairing states remains unchanged, with Schleswig-Holstein scheduled to take over the presidency starting October 1, 2027.
Gordon Schnieder, the Minister-President and MPK chair of Rheinland-Pfalz, stated that the state possessed the necessary infrastructure through its ongoing role, making it ready to continue the chairmanship. He emphasized the close and trusting coordination maintained with the other participating states.
Olaf Lies, Minister-President and co-chair of the MPK from Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), thanked Rheinland-Pfalz for assuming this responsibility. He highlighted that this continuous commitment demonstrated how quickly and cohesively the states can act when faced with unforeseen circumstances. Lies added that continuity is especially valued right now, given the extensive reforms pending between the federal government and the individual states.
