Several members of the SPD Bundestag (Federal Parliament) representing the Ruhr region are increasing pressure on their party and faction leadership. According to the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, they are specifically calling for stronger leadership from the party’s top figures as well as within the parliamentary faction.
Markus Töns of Gelsenkirchen, a spokesperson for the SPD MPs from the area, told the newspaper that the demands related to both policy areas and the communication strategies with the CDU/CSU and the media. He stressed that debates within every local branch and every council faction are a necessary component of democratic decision-making. However, Töns added that it remains the responsibility of the chairpersons to implement the results of this democratic process with determination. Despite this, the regional MPs stated that they did not intend to instigate personal disputes about personnel.
Hendrik Bollmann of Herne, another SPD MP, declared, “This federal government either wins together or loses together. The idea that one side could appear better than the others is incorrect”. Sebastian Fiedler, his faction colleague from Mülheim, reinforced this sentiment, stating that in the current political climate, “the opponent in this state is not the Union [CDU/CSU], but the AfD”.
