Sven Schulze, the current acting Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt (CDU), has informed the Chairman of the Minister-President Conference (MPK), Gordon Schnieder of Rhineland-Palatinate (CDU), that he will not be able to assume the chairmanship on October 1st as originally planned. The letter, which was provided to the dts news agency, explained the change in plans.
Schulze stated that due to the results of the recent State Parliament election and the resulting seat distribution, which is set to be constituted on October 6, 2026, the uncertainty surrounding the formation of a government in Saxony-Anhalt makes him feel that taking responsibility for the chairmanship on October 1, 2026, is no longer appropriate.
He further commented in the letter that, under the current circumstances, “a flawless technical and substantive preparation and execution of the annual MPK cannot be guaranteed.”
In his communication, Schulze requested that Rhineland-Palatinate coordinate with the co-chairman of Lower Saxony. His aim is for them to propose a way forward at the forthcoming Annual Conference of the Heads of State and Senate Chanceries (Jahres-CdSK). It was noted that the letter appeared to have been prepared some time in advance, with only the date being added by hand.
