FC Schalke 04 has decided to extend the contract of goalkeeper Loris Karius. The 32-year-old’s new arrangement runs until June 30, 2028, the Bundesliga newcomer announced on Tuesday.
Karius was a crucial pillar of the team during their promotion season. The Royal Blues boasted the league’s best defense, conceding only 31 goals. Karius made 30 appearances and kept 13 clean sheets.
Youri Mulder, the Director of Professional Football, commented on the decision, stating, “Loris contributed significantly to the success with his consistently strong performances as a reliable anchor. The team can count on him. Especially in tight matches, his decisive saves have, several times, made the difference and secured important points.”
Karius himself expressed his commitment, saying, “The last season showed what we can achieve as a team through unity, energy, and focus. That is why I made the decision with complete certainty to extend my contract. I am very much looking forward to the new season and the return to the Bundesliga.”
Karius joined FC Schalke 04 in January 2025 and has since appeared in 35 official matches for the club. The former German U-national team player has accumulated 285 senior appearances throughout his career. Of these, 95 matches were played in the Bundesliga for 1. FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Union Berlin. His professional debut occurred in December 2012 for Mainz 05. Furthermore, during his time with FC Liverpool, he reached the Champions League final in 2018, where he was in goal for the Reds in all 13 matches of that particular campaign.
