The Social Welfare Association Deutschland (SoVD) issued sharp criticism regarding the planned healthcare reform ahead of an expert hearing, specifically warning against potential cuts to sickness benefits. Michaela Engelmeier, the chairwoman of the SoVD, told the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition) that such a measure is “completely incomprehensible and socially problematic”. She added that it is “highly unsolidaristic and will only fuel the discussion surrounding a multi-tier healthcare system”.
Engelmeier argued that the draft legislation lacks balance, noting that contributions have always been paid by statutory health insurance (GKV) members, who have endured years of increased premiums. She criticized the plan to cut benefits further and raise the co-payments for medication. Furthermore, she objected to the federal government’s unwillingness to fully cover the contributions for people receiving basic security benefits. She urged the government to “fulfill its obligation and finance the billions in contributions for individuals on basic security through tax revenue”.
The controversy surrounding the healthcare reform had already gained momentum over the weekend, involving Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU).
