CSU leader Markus Söder bolstered Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s position in the debate regarding the expected departure of Patrick Schnieder (CDU). Speaking in a ZDF summer interview on Sunday, Söder commented, “A federal chancellor has to make decisions, and those are not easy.” He drew a parallel to a football coach, stating that the chancellor must make both substitutions and changes. Söder described the chancellor’s handling of the situation as “appropriate.”
Merz had expressed his conviction that “a change in the Ministry of Transport is obviously necessary.” Söder noted that the purported preferred candidate, Fritz Güntzler, could potentially have initially accepted and then retracted his candidacy. However, he concluded that this would merely result in a “slight delay.”
Merz had previously announced on Friday that the current Federal Minister of Health, Nina Warken (CDU), would take over the position of Minister of State for the future Union parliamentary group leader, Thorsten Frei (CDU). CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann will assume Warken’s duties. Between time, multiple media outlets consistently reported that Schnieder would also have to leave. Merz, however, has only publicly confirmed the presence of further cabinet changes without naming individuals.
