Spahn Rates Trust with SPD’s Miersch a ‘Ten’ Despite Political Friction

Jens Spahn, the leader of the CDU’s parliamentary group (Union), stated that he views his relationship with SPD faction leader Matthias Miersch as highly trusting. Speaking to the “Machtmenschen” podcast by “Focus,” Spahn replied that if he had to rate the level of trust between the two men on a scale of one to ten, he would give it a “ten.”

However, the Union parliamentary chairman conceded that this was not the case at the beginning of their acquaintance, noting that initially, they had not yet gotten to know each other well. He explained that trust grew over time, thanks both to shared successes and reliable collaboration, but also because they were able to discuss openly and honestly with each other when things were not working.

Spahn does not see this willingness to communicate as conflicting with the general sentiment within his own party. He clarified that while he is not saying that everything is running perfectly between the Union and the SPD, the existence of this trust-based relationship allows them to discuss disagreements openly.
