SPD Calls for Price Cap on Fuel Due to Geopolitical and Energy Concerns

Matthias Miersch, chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, has declared that a price cap on gasoline is a viable option given sustained high fuel costs. Speaking to “Welt” television on Monday, Miersch stated: “For me, price caps are not off the table at all. I have repeatedly emphasized: We must prepare for the coming months”. He highlighted that the uncertainty surrounding the conflict with Iran means that the federal government needs to be prepared for potential crises and cannot afford to be unprepared.

Regarding the Bavarian Minister-President and CSU chairman, Markus Söder, who suggested considering an extension of the fuel discount amid persistently high gas prices, Miersch remained cautious. He criticized the idea, saying, “You cannot keep watering this like this for months or years”. He concluded that various measures would need to be carefully considered. The SPD faction leader also pointed out that, despite earlier criticism, the fuel discount had been passed on to drivers.
