The repeated insolvency of Galeria is putting pressure on the federal government. According to the SPD General Secretary, Tim Klüssendorf, Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) must take responsibility, stating to the news magazine Focus, “I now expect Minister Katharina Reiche to fight for a future for Galeria and its 12,000 employees.”
Klüssendorf argued that the workers should not be held responsible for the recurring crises. He pointed out that in the last six years alone, the employees have had to endure four separate requests for bankruptcy. He asserted that the workers should not again be the ones forced to absorb the consequences of years of management mistakes.
