Saarländische Ministerpräsidentin Anke Rehlinger, who also serves as the deputy leader of the SPD, is demanding course corrections from the federal government following recent elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Speaking to Politico, she stated that a continuation of the status quo is unsustainable.
Rehlinger emphasized that these poor electoral results primarily represented a vote against federal politics. She asserted that voters were not dissatisfied with the state-level political lineup, but rather with the policies of the federal government, especially those pursued by the Chancellor.
She views the strong performance of the AfD as a crucial warning signal that must be understood in Berlin. According to Rehlinger, the high result for the AfD absolutely signals that changes need to happen. The federal government must deliver socially just reforms, and she insisted that simply explaining their policies better is not enough; the policies themselves must fundamentally improve.
In addition to these federal demands, Rehlinger also called for the SPD to develop a sharper profile. She believes the party needs greater substantive clarity in its positions, adding that merely being the defender of social justice against the Union is insufficient.
The SPD deputy leader dismissed recent internal personnel debates regarding party leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas, arguing that such discussions do not improve the answers to any policy questions. Instead, she stressed the necessity of concrete political adjustments.
Specifically, Rehlinger urged the federal government to focus on stimulating economic growth, refining the pension package, and initiating a comprehensive reform of the care system. She concluded that if these issues are addressed clearly, public approval ratings will inevitably rise again.
