Speculation regarding a change in the chancellery during the current legislative period has met with sharp criticism within Chancellery circles. Sources close to the Chancellor told newspapers from the Funke Media Group that pursuing these speculations is characteristic of the AfD, diminishes the authority of the political center, and damages the government’s credibility.
These sources dismissed the idea of a change in leadership as a “naive thought” one that shows a “dangerous inclination toward stirring up trouble”. They argued that it is always easier to “talk about personnel” than to seriously engage with complex issues such as income tax rates or the long-term care reform. Furthermore, they described the “wild speculation” as evidence of a striking lack of knowledge regarding constitutional matters and political reality. The source from Merz’s circle stressed that stability in the Bundestag is being jeopardized, arguing that given the current global crises, this negligence is “doubly culpable”.
In response to the recent poor polling figures for the Chancellor, reports indicate that elements within the CDU/CSU (Union) have been entertained the possibility of an early leadership transition.
