St. Pauli Defender Hauke Wahl Makes High-Profile Move to Bundesliga Rival Wolfsburg

Second-division side FC St. Pauli has announced the departure of central defender Hauke Wahl, who is set to join league rival VfL Wolfsburg. The Kiezclub confirmed the move on Monday, though both clubs agreed to maintain silence regarding the specifics of the transfer fee.

Wahl joined St. Pauli for the 2023/24 season after coming from Holstein Kiel. He quickly established himself as a crucial performer and a key leader at the club. As part of the defensive three-man chain, he contributed to the Hamburg team achieving Bundesliga promotion in their inaugural season, followed by two subsequent seasons in the top division. The paths between the player and the club are now diverging following the failure to secure continued top-flight status. During his spell with FC St. Pauli, the native Hamburg player made 105 official appearances, scoring four goals and providing one assist.

The club’s technical director, Andreas Bornemann, paid tribute to Wahl’s service, stating, “Hauke has gained immense respect during his time with us, both on and off the field, as an essential component of a successful team. We always knew our potential with him and would have liked to see him in a leading role for us in the years to come.”

Wahl himself expressed gratitude for his time with the team. “The promotion, which fulfilled my dream of playing in the Bundesliga, the highs in the league and the cup, the people within the club and in the stands-everything that makes this club special-will always hold a place in my memory.”
