Tension in the Baltic: Russian Frigate Targets Danish Surveillance Helicopter

According to Denmark, an incident involving a Russian frigate has occurred in the Baltic Sea. Danish military officials reported that on Monday, during a routine photographic surveillance flight, a Danish Air Force helicopter was reportedly fired upon by the frigate. The surveillance was taking place in international waters near Gedser. Two flares were fired at the helicopter; one of the flares was observed to have passed the helicopter at a “short distance.” The Danish Defense Minister, Jeppe Bruus Christensen, characterized the event as a “serious incident,” stating that it demonstrates Russia’s increasing willingness to push boundaries. In response, Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, announced that the Russian ambassador would be summoned.
