Ukraine Support Secures Europe’s Future, Says Defense Chairman Röwekamp

In the context of the debate surrounding German aid to Ukraine, Thomas Röwekamp, the chairman of the Bundestag Defence Committee, has emphasized the long-term significance of the support. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he cautioned that the focus must extend beyond merely waiting for the cessation of Russian hostilities.

Röwekamp noted that even after the conflict, Ukraine is set to possess one of Europe’s strongest conventional armies, making it a critical anchor for collective European defense capabilities. Therefore, he added, the collaboration between Germany and Ukraine is intrinsically linked to the future security of both Germany and the continent.

He highlighted that Germany is standing by Ukraine’s side, thereby embracing responsibility for the security of the European continent. Furthermore, Röwekamp welcomed the recent trip to Kyiv by CDU politician Friedrich Merz. The Defence policy expert stated that Merz displayed “stance and leadership” in Kyiv, noting that he is not intimidated by Russian threats nor deterred from his established course. In his view, supporting Ukraine is vital, as the country requires German assistance to defend itself and subsequently negotiate peace from a strong position.
