The Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin, Oleksij Makejew, issued a warning following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt regarding the pro-Russian stance adopted by sections of the AfD and BSW parties. Makejew told the newspapers of the Funke Media Group, stating, “It is worrisome that political forces that relativize, justify, or downplay war crimes are receiving support.”
He emphasized that the war will not come to an end merely because military aid to Ukraine is withdrawn, adding that Russia itself does not seek peace. The diplomat recalled that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had directly threatened Germany. Makejew strongly reaffirmed Ukraine’s demands that sanctions against Russia must be maintained, and urged against reverting to Russian gas supply, even in light of Germany’s current economic difficulties. “It makes Germany dependent and exploitable,” Makejew commented.
