The Police Union (GdP) has warned of an anticipated rise in attacks ahead of the upcoming state elections. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, GdP Chairman Jochen Kopelke stated that they have been observing a steady increase in the coarsening nature of political disagreements. Unfortunately, this trend is affecting campaigners at the local level as well.
Kopelke reported that his colleagues are increasingly having to deal with hostility, threats, and physical assault. He characterized this as a dangerous trajectory for democracy. “Anyone who attacks democratic engagement is attacking the core of our rule of law-and the state must react to this with the utmost determination,” he asserted.
To address this, Kopelke advised local political parties to coordinate proactively with security authorities. He stressed that a determined combination of visible police presence, consistent criminal prosecution, and clear protective concepts for rallies and informational booths is essential. Parties and candidates are urged to coordinate their security measures with the regional police forces early in the campaign period.
