Wüst Calls for State Modernization: Streamlining Bureaucracy to Restore Public Trust

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister-President, Hendrik Wüst (CDU), advocates for making the state significantly “faster and simpler.” According to statements given to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, he believes that trust in democracy and the government can only return when citizens perceive policy makers as both having the will and the ability to take action. He stated firmly: “The people will regain more trust in our state if the state demonstrates greater confidence in the people.”

This philosophy drives the Federal Modernization Agenda, an initiative in which North Rhine-Westphalia has been heavily involved. Wüst highlighted that the agenda-comprising 200 specific measures-is a major milestone in state modernization. Its purpose is to fundamentally review reporting requirements and other regulations, thereby relieving businesses and citizens of excessive bureaucracy. Furthermore, it seeks to create greater freedom for local municipalities. He characterized this effort as “a powerful blow against unnecessary bureaucracy and an important step towards a modern state.”

Looking ahead, Wüst and his ministers are scheduled to travel to Berlin this Wednesday for a cabinet meeting session that will also include Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU).
