Construction work for a new highway bridge in the Gremberg district of Cologne has led to the discovery of an unexploded World War II aerial bomb on Friday.
The city of Cologne confirmed the discovery in an afternoon statement. The device is an American bomb with a delayed-action fuse and requires immediate defusal.
A security perimeter of 300 meters will be established for the operation. As a consequence, the A4 and A559 highways are expected to be closed from approximately 2:00 PM. Residents in the immediate vicinity are not affected and rail traffic will continue as usual. The precise timing of the defusal remains unconfirmed. The city is urging motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
