Meteorological services in Germany have issued warnings for severe thunderstorms across parts of southern Germany, effective from 3 PM to 10 PM local time Friday.
The alert encompasses regions within the states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Forecasters report that isolated, potentially intense thunderstorms are developing and are expected to persist through the night, primarily south of the Main and Moselle rivers. Due to the slow movement of these storm cells, localized hail accumulations up to two centimeters in diameter and strong wind gusts are possible.
The primary concern, according to the national weather service, stems from the potential for extremely heavy rainfall. This could lead to flooding of basements and roads. Localized damage from lightning strikes is also a possibility.
Currently, the impact of these slow-moving thunderstorms is limited to relatively small areas. However, authorities indicate that the warnings may be extended in duration and broadened to include additional regions, dependent on storm development.
