Former US President Donald Trump has defended his decision to host a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, responding to what he characterized as negative media coverage. In a statement released on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump claimed that reports suggesting a detrimental outcome to the meeting were inaccurate.
Trump asserted that Putin had initially preferred the summit to take place outside of the United States, describing a disagreement on the location. He further contended that had the meeting been held elsewhere, it would have been met with criticism from media outlets he described as being under Democratic control.
The former President also linked the summit discussion to domestic political concerns, specifically the ongoing debate surrounding federal control of policing in Washington D.C. He alleged that these same media sources were seeking to highlight crime rates in the nation’s capital and other urban areas, but assured his followers that he would prevent such a narrative from taking hold. Trump concluded by referencing what he described as enhanced security along the southern border, claiming a significant decrease in illegal immigration over the past three months and pledging similar safety measures for cities nationwide, with a particular focus on Washington D.C.
