Germany’s police union is urging improved inter-agency data sharing as the government prepares to approve the establishment of a National Security Council (NSR).
Jochen Kopelke, federal chairman of the Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP), expressed support for the federal government’s plans for the NSR in comments to the “Rheinische Post” newspaper. However, he emphasized that the council’s effectiveness would hinge on the creation of jointly developed, up-to-date and cross-agency situational assessments, providing a solid foundation for strategic and operational decision-making.
Kopelke stated that the integration of internal and external security through a future NSR is essential for preserving democracy and a free society. He cautioned, however, that constitutional principles must be carefully observed. “The NSR must not give the impression of a central enforcement authority” Kopelke warned, adding that established responsibilities and intervention structures of state and federal agencies should not be undermined.
