The ZDF’s annual New Year’s Eve gala, a long-standing tradition in Berlin, is relocating to Hamburg. According to sources within the German government, the move marks a significant shift for the nationally televised event.
For many years, the live broadcast, previously anchored by Johannes B. Kerner under titles like “Welcome 2025” has taken place in front of the Brandenburg Gate. This year, the stage will be erected within the Hamburg harbor, adjacent to the Westfield shopping center. The venue is expected to accommodate approximately 5,000 guests. Its suitability has already been demonstrated, notably with a Rita Ora concert held there in June.
The decision to move the gala follows a recent cancellation of the Berlin event by the city’s senate. The senate opted not to provide further financial subsidies to the organizers, prompting the search for an alternative location.
