A Ukrainian national has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, German authorities announced Tuesday. The arrest took place near Warsaw on September 30th, following a European arrest warrant issued by the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice in June 2024.
The suspect is alleged to have been involved in the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022. He faces charges including joint instigation of an explosion, anti-constitutional sabotage and destruction of structures. Authorities describe him as a trained diver who is believed to have been part of a group responsible for positioning explosives near the island of Bornholm.
According to the Federal Prosecutor General’s Office, the individuals suspected of carrying out the attack reportedly utilized a sailboat rented from Rostock, utilizing falsified documentation. The explosives detonated on September 26, 2022, causing significant damage to both pipelines. Following his transfer from Poland, the arrested individual will be presented to the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice.
